1. Braun Silk-épil 9 – Best Epilator for 2017
Silk Epil series 9 epilator is the latest addition to Braun’s collection and the winner of our Best Epilator 2017 award!
This model is fast becoming a bestseller for the famous brand as women like you are looking for an even better epilation experience.
My Braun Silk Epil 9 review aims to shed light on why this model is the best for me and so many other women.
- Very efficient for removing short hairs
- Fast epilation
You might have noticed that there are many different models available.
In fact, you’re probably just as confused about their features as I was when I first started this guide!
What you need to know is that no matter which series 9 model you pick, they all use the same basic epilator. The only difference is in the attachments that come with each model.
We’ll take a look at Braun’s best-selling models below, but first:
Let me give you a brief overview of the epilator itself.
Silk Epil 9 comes with 40 tweezers and two different speed options. It uses something called the ‘MicroGrip’ technology, which is specifically designed to remove even the finest and shortest hairs. The MicroGrip tweezers are longer and wider than those of the previous version.
Compared to other epilators, it also comes with a much wider head, meaning you can cover more skin in one stroke. This is one feature that makes version 9 superior to all others – seriously fast and efficient epilation.
Each and every model is suitable for use on your whole body and some of them also come with a facial cap. Braun Silk Epil 9 epilators are cordless and completely waterproof. You only need one hour to charge it, and you can use it for about 40 minutes after that.
On the downside:
You can’t use this unit while it’s charging.
However, considering how fast this epilator is, 40 minutes should be enough to cover the most important parts of your body.
The Braun epilator 9 with its MicroGrip technology removes hair as short as 0.5mm. While there are other (cheaper) devices that claim to offer the same level of performance, not many of them actually deliver.
Braun is definitely an exception to this as it effectively removes even the shortest hairs on your skin.
Additional features for all models include:
- Pivoting head with massage rollers
- High-frequency massage system
- Built-in light.
|Wet&Dry technology|| Can't be used when charging |
| Special MicroGrip tweezers|
| Efficient for removing very short hairs|
| Wider head covering more skin in one go|
| Pivoting head|
Braun Silk-épil 9521 is the most basic version of the new series 9 as the only attachment in the box is a skin contact cap (also known as efficiency cap).
The main head comes with massage rollers to soothe your skin during epilation. This means the tweezers are not actually that close to your skin.
If you want to epilate very short hairs, this cap comes in handy as it ensures close contact.
|Cheaper than other Braun 9 models|| Can't be used on face |
Braun Silk-épil 9579 is the second highest rated and second bestselling epilator online!
It comes with five different attachments on top of the pivoting head and is the perfect multi-purpose tool for you:
- Shaver head, which turns your epilator into an electric women’s shaver
- Trimmer cap that lets you trim hair where needed
- Skin (efficiency) cap, which ensures maximum contact with your skin for more effective epilation
- Facial cap that is specifically designed to protect your delicate skin
- Facial cleansing brush for removing make-up and impurities
As opposed to Silk-épil 9521, this model features everything you’d want in an epilator.
|Total body epilator, including face|| More expensive than other popular models |
| Very popular and well-rated model|
Braun Silk-épil 9941 is the original version of the luxurious SkinSpa edition.
It focuses more on epilation and comes with three attachments:
- Skin contact cap
- Facial cap
- Exfoliating brush head.
The exfoliation brush head with 10 000 fine bristles removes dead skin cells and impurities to improve the appearance of your skin.
|Can be used for facial hair|| Doesn't come with many attachments|
|Exfoliating brush for radiating skin|
|Cheaper than other series 9 models|
Braun Silk-épil 9941e is a newer version of the highly popular SkinSpa model. It is advertised as a 3-in-1 epilator and exfoliation system and comes with three extras:
- Deep exfoliation brush
- Sensitive exfoliation brush
- Skin cap.
The deep exfoliation brush head cleans your skin six times more effectively than a manual treatment could.
|Great for skin care||Expensive compared to other models|
|Doesn't include a facial cap|
2. Braun Silk Epil 7 – Best for Face and Body
Braun Silk Epil 7 Wet and Dry epilators are second best on our list.
They are the brand’s highest-selling models next to the newer series 9 epilators reviewed above.
- Great epilator for face
Now, you may ask:
What is the difference between Braun Silk Epil 7 vs. 9?
The easiest way to answer your question is by giving a brief overview of the series 7 epilator and comparing features where possible.
Similarly to Silk Epil 9, there are a number of different models available for this generation. And similarly, all of them come with the same device. Again, the difference is in the accessories and attachments that come with each model.
I will review some of the most popular models below, but first:
Let’s take a look at this popular Braun epilator.
The Braun epilator 7 comes with 40 Close-Grip tweezers that remove even the tiniest hairs with the root. The technology used for pulling our hairs is the main difference between Braun Silk Epil 9 vs. 7. It comes with two speeds: ‘soft’ for extra-gentle and ‘fast’ for high-efficiency epilation.
You can use all models for total body epilation. And most epilators in series 7 include a specifically designed facial cap, making it one of the best epilators for the face.
Silk Epil 7 epilators are all cordless as well, and the rechargeable battery lasts for about 40 minutes after an hour charge.
You can’t use any of the Epil models while charging for safety reasons. Braun epilator 7 is a powerful and fast epilator, so a 40-minute session should be more than enough to cover your arms or legs in one go.
The Wet&Dry technology used makes this epilator waterproof, thus easy to clean, and perfect for use in the shower. Having said that, you might find that dry epilation is far more effective as less hair gets broken.
The Close-Grip tweezers are just as effective as Braun 9’s MicroGrip technology for getting rid of very short hairs minimum 0.5 mm in length.
All models from the 7th generation come with these additional features:
- Pivoting head
- High-frequency massage system.
|Wet&Dry technology|| Can't be used when charging |
|Works very well for very short hairs|
| Fast and efficient|
| Optional attachments make it highly customizable|
| Pivoting head|
Closer Look at Popular Silk Epil 7 Models
Braun Silk-épil 7681 is a multi-functional epilator and one of the highest-selling models for Braun.
It is very similar to the 9579 reviewed above and so popular because it comes with five different attachments:
- Shaver head – turns your Braun 7681 epilator into an electric shaver.
- Trimmer cap – allows you to trim hair before epilation or just trim hair where needed.
- Facial cap – is specifically designed to remove unwanted facial hair.
- Sensitive area or precision cap – covers the head, leaving only a small patch of skin workable for the tweezers. It is especially useful for epilating sensitive areas like your underarms or bikini line and is great for beginners.
- Efficiency cap – helps the epilator keep maximum contact with skin to ensure a faster and more efficient epilation.
|Suitable for use on your face|| More expensive than other series 7 models|
Braun Silk Epil 7 561 is a slightly newer version of the 7681. When doing research for this guide, I had a hard time spotting the difference between these two models.
|Suitable for use on your face||Can't be used when charging|
The 7929 is a 2-in-1 total body epilation and exfoliation system, offering a mini-spa experience in the comfort of your home.
The device comes with two attachments:
- Exfoliation brush
- Facial cleaning brush.
The sonic exfoliation brush with ten thousand fine bristles is meant to remove dead skin cells and massage your skin to improve its appearance.
The facial cleansing brush is suitable for removing impurities and make-up, offering up to 6 times better cleansing than regular washing.
This particular model doesn’t come with any epilator-specific attachments. Because there is no facial cap, I wouldn’t recommend using this on your face.
|Great for skin care||Can't be used on facial hair|
|Good epilation power||Doesn't include epilator attachments|
3. Philips Satinelle Advanced – Best Mid-Range Epilator
The Satinelle Advanced is a newer and more modern version of Philips’ best-selling HP6401 model. It features a sleek design, comes with five attachments, and uses the Wet&Dry technology.
- S-shaped handle
- Best for thicker hairs
- Total body epilator
The new Satinelle comes with 17 round ceramic discs that provide 32 so-called catching points for removing the hairs. The ergonomic S-shaped handle and the anti-slip grip make it comfortable to hold and easy to steer. Like all multi-functional epilators, it comes with dual speed – one for removing thinner and one for thicker hairs.
Similarly to the HP6401, it doesn’t grab all the hairs at once so you might have to go over the same area multiple times to ensure your skin is completely hair-free.
Satinelle Advanced is a total body hair removal machine and works great for all areas of your body, including your face.
It comes with five attachments:
- Women’s shaver head and comb attachment for a close shave
- Facial cap for the sensitive face area
- Delicate area cap for sensitive areas like underarms and the bikini line
- Massage cap to relax the skin during epilation
The Satinelle Advanced is a Wet & Dry epilator, which means you can use it both in the shower as well as on dry skin. It all comes down to your preferences but most users say it is more efficient on dry skin. Using it in the shower, on the other hand, is said to reduce epilation pain.
It takes about one and a half hours to fully charge and the battery lasts for 40 minutes after that. Unfortunately, it can’t be used when charging so it might not be the best choice for you if you have a lot of hairs to remove.
The optimal hair length for efficient epilation with this Philips epilator is about 3 to 4 mm. Additionally, it works best on thicker hairs as it tends to just break or completely miss fine thin hairs.
Additional features include a built-in light.
|5 different attachments||Doesn't work that well for very short hairs|
|Wet & Dry technology||Not very efficient for removing thin hairs|
|Cordless use||Can't be used when charging|
|Comfortable to hold|
|Modern S-shaped design|
|Best for medium length hairs|
This Emjoi epilator is simple, powerful and in our list as the best depilator for coarse hair.
It is the perfect choice for you if you are looking for an efficient epilator that could remove stubborn hairs without breaking the bank.
- 72 tweezers make it great for epilating coarse hair
- Works best on medium length hairs
Emjoi Emagine AP-18 boasts a whopping 72 tweezers, which is part of the reason why it is so effective in getting rid of thick, coarse hair. The tweezers are arranged on two disks spinning in opposite directions. In the middle of these dual opposed heads are “Middle Lifting” fingers, which are used to lift small and flat hairs that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The head is wider when compared to other similar models, so this is one of the best devices for legs, thighs and arms.
The Emjoi epilator is corded as the 72 tweezers require quite a bit of power to work efficiently. It’s also only meant for use on dry skin, but it is recommended to have a hot shower and exfoliate before use.
Emjoi claims that the middle lifting fingers allow it to pull out hairs as short as 0.5 mm. However, it is more effective on medium length hairs.
Although the Emjoi AP-18 is one of the top rated and top selling units online, there are some mixed reviews regarding its efficiency. Some people report that it’s perhaps too powerful as it breaks more hair than it pulls out. To be honest, this is highly individual and like I said, it works best on thick, coarse hairs. You won’t know if it suits you until you try it!
|72 tweezers||No Wet & Dry technology|
| Effective on larger areas like arms and legs||Corded|
| Great for removing coarse hairs||Not very effective on very short hairs|
|No additional accessories or features|
|Not suitable for sensitive skin|
This version uses the same technology as the original but can be used both corded and cordless. You might want to check it out if a rechargeable unit is something you are looking to buy.
Keep in mind that because it has 72 tweezers, it’s quite powerful and the battery lasts for around 30 minutes after charging.
Emjoi is the first brand to design a special epilator for men. The AP-18MS is very similar to the original AP-18 model but comes with some key differences.
The men’s epilator comes with one additional attachment:
A special shaving/trimmer head, which turns your epilator into an electric shaver!
The trimmer is a useful feature as the optimal hair length for effective epilation is about 3-4 mm. If you don’t shave, you’ll probably have longer hairs than that. The trimmer allows you to prepare for epilation and ensure it’s less painful.
The head curves a little bit differently than the original and it helps to avoid your skin getting stuck between the tweezers.
The head of the original version is covered in plastic while the AP-18MS is made out of metal. This makes the men’s epilator sturdier and more durable.
If you’re looking for some basic epilation action, Philips Satinelle will do the trick. But if you want a truly customized epilating experience based on your needs then Emjoi AP-18MS for Men is the way to go.
5. Philips HP6576 Satin Perfect – Best Whole Body Epilator
Philips HP6576 is a premium epilator, listed as the best whole body epilator in our guide.
Read our Philips epilator review if you are looking for maximum comfort and fast epilation, all in one device.
- Can be used while charging
- Comes with four attachments
- Doesn’t use the Wet&Dry technology
SatinPerfect comes with 32 ceramic tweezers and two speeds. Combine that with the extra wide pivoting head, and you get a fast epilator which can pull out more hairs in one go. The HP6576 is a whole-body epilator and works great for your arms, underarms, legs, and the bikini line.
It comes with four different attachments:
- Trimmer/women’s shaver head
- Styling head
- Bikini comb
- Illuminating smart tweezers
Now, there is one thing I need to clear up:
Confusion over whether this epilator is suitable for use on facial hair or not.
Despite what the box and product listings say, there is no facial cap included in the kit. This means you shouldn’t use this epilator on your face. However, if you just need to trim your eyebrows or pull out a few hairs from your upper lip, Philips has added a pair of ‘luxury tweezers’ with a built-in light that can be used for that purpose.
If removing facial hair is your primary concern, check out the first two epilators in our list.
This Philips epilator can be used both corded and cordless. You can use it for 40 minutes on battery and need about an hour to charge fully.
The biggest benefit of Philips SatinPerfect?
You can use it while it’s charging! It’s a huge plus as there is nothing more annoying than running out of battery mid-epilation!
Despite being cordless, Philips SatinPerfect is not a Wet and Dry epilator so do not try to use it in the shower! To reduce pain, Philips has added a massage system to stimulate and soothe the skin.
The optimum hair length for SatinPerfect is about 3-4 millimitres, so it works best on medium length hairs.
Additional features include a built-in massage system and a built-in light.
|Both corded and cordless||No Wet&Dry technology|
|Can be used when charging||Not suitable for use on facial hairs|
|Multi-purpose use|| Not effective for epilating very short hairs|
The Panasonic ED90-P Wet/Dry Epilator and Shaver is still one of the best hair removal devices on the market today.
It comes with loads of accessories and additional features, making it the perfect multi-purpose epilator at a very competitive price.
- Six different attachments, including an exclusive pedicure buffer (our favorite feature!)
- Long battery life
- Works best on medium length hairs
The Panasonic epilator comes with 48 high precision rotating tweezers and dual speed.
It includes six different attachments which means you can customize it the way you want:
- The regular epilation head pivots 60 degrees and exposes all 48 tweezers. This attachment makes it a good epilator for legs.
- The Gentle Epilation Cap covers some of the tweezers and turns it into a gentle epilator for sensitive areas like underarms. This head is also suitable for beginners as it allows you to get used to the sensation of epilating without too much pain.
- The Precise Epilation Cap offers an even gentler experience in areas like the bikini line.
- Shaver head with a pop-up trimmer
- Bikini comb
- Pedicure buffer
The pedicure buffer is what makes this Panasonic epilator so great! No other brand offers this feature. It rotates and removes dry skin much better than you could remove manually. Most users are very happy with the addition!
The ED90 is a whole-body hair removal machine. Although some users say it works well on facial hair, I wouldn’t go anywhere near it with this device. If you’re looking for an epilator to remove hairs from your face, check out the two models reviewed above.
Panasonic ED90-P is a cordless epilator and uses Wet and Dry technology. This means you can use it on dry skin or while having a shower. Using it in the shower is a great option if you’re afraid of pain. However, you might notice that wet epilation is not as effective as it is on dry skin.
You need one hour to charge the epilator, and it lasts for 40 minutes after that. Panasonic ED90 is praised for its long battery life, which isn’t a given in this industry.
You can’t use the Panasonic epilator when charging, so it might not be suitable for use on areas that have a lot of hair.
The optimal hair length for Panasonic ES-ED90-P is about 2-3 mm, so it works best with short to medium length hairs.
Additional features include a built-in LED light.
|Wet & Dry technology|| Added costs to keep it running over the years|
|Suitable for sensitive skin|| Can't be used while charging|
|Long battery life|| Not very effective on very short hairs|
| Pivoting head|
| Highly customizable|
| Replacement blades/foil widely available|
7. Epilady Legend 4th –
Best Cordless Epilator (Longest Battery Time)
This Epilady epilator is a true legend, just like the name suggests!
It is an improved version of the Epilady Classic, first ever epilator created in 1987. Thousands of women still swear by this iconic brand!
- Very long battery time (up to 60 minutes)
- Efficient for removing very short hairs
- Works best on dark coarse hairs
- Needs to be charged overnight
Epilady Legend 4, the brand’s bestseller, comes with two speeds and a total of 40 tweezers. You can use it on your arms, legs, bikini line, and even face.
I would personally be very hesitant to use it on my face, but many reviewers say it works just fine.
It includes one attachment:
The perfect angle cap, which helps to keep the epilator at an optimal angle at all times.
The Epilady 4 can be used both corded and cordless, and you can also use it while it’s charging.
There is one downside:
The charging time is extremely long. Most other models only take about an hour to load fully, but Epilady pretty much needs a full day. The battery then lasts up to 60 minutes, almost twice as long as other epilators on the market. If you don’t mind keeping it plugged overnight and battery time is important to you, this is a very good epilator.
Keep in mind that it is a dry epilator only.
Epilady claims the Legend 4 can remove even the shortest hairs and many users report it to be true. In fact, it is one of the few models besides Braun Silk Epil series 7 and 9 that’s capable of that.
|Corded and cordless use|| No Wet & Dry technology|
| Can be used while charging|| It takes 8-12 hours to charge it fully |
| Battery lasts up to 60 minutes on full charge|| Doesn't include many accessories|
|Quiet|| Not very effective for epilating fine hairs|
| Long battery life|
| Works great for very short hairs|
| Efficiently removes coarse hair|
How to Choose the Best Epilator – Buyer’s Guide
As I’m sure you already know:
Epilators have a lot of benefits but picking the right device is not an easy task.
There are things you need to consider, and there are too many different brands, designs, and options available.
To make matters worse:
Some brands bring out new improved versions regularly!
The main thing is to get to know your options and then choose the product based on your needs and budget. Our Best Epilator Buying Guide outlines some of the most important things for you to consider and will help you find what you need.
But there is one more point I need to address before we move on:
I want to talk about pain.
You might be tempted to choose an epilator based on how painful or painless it reportedly is. I can’t blame you. Many product reviews also claim that specific models are more or less painful than others. While it’s true that an epilator with more tweezers might be more painful, there are many things that may affect how much it hurts:
- Your own personal threshold of pain
- The area you are epilating
- If it’s your first time epilating
- How long are the hairs on your body, etc.
The first time (or if you haven’t epilated for a while) WILL BE painful.
Think about it:
You’re likely to have longer and thicker hairs which cover your skin evenly. Pulling out hundreds of hairs will inevitably hurt, but it will get better after the first time, I promise!
If you are still worried, check out our epilator reviews above. Braun Silk Epil 7681, Silk Epil 7561 and Panasonic ED90-P come with a ‘beginners cap’ that will allow you to get used to the sensation of pain.
Now that that’s cleared up let’s take a look at some of the things to consider when buying an epilator.
Your budget will determine what kind of features are available to you. Prices for epilators range anywhere from $30 to $150. Cheaper models are pretty basic, more expensive devices come with additional features and accessories. Before settling on a specific budget, make sure you know what you’re expecting your epilator to do as even cheaper units have their benefits.
Many reviews claim that how powerful an epilator is will depend on the number of tweezers it has. Personally, I don’t think that’s everything. Models with a wider head are capable of covering more skin in one go, thus making them more efficient. Higher speeds also contribute to how fast hairs get removed. I would opt for a model that has a combination of all three.
Think about which part of your body you’re most likely going to epilate. Some models can only be used for certain areas like legs; some come with specific caps, which transform them from full body epilators to facial hair or bikini epilators. It might be worth buying a more expensive product that is specifically designed to cover different areas of the body.
Wet & Dry Technology
Epilators using the Wet & Dry technology are very convenient as you can use them in the shower. Warm water is known to soothe the skin and open up pores, meaning it might help minimize the pain caused by epilating. However, dry epilators are considered by some to be more effective as water can weigh down the hairs, making it more difficult to grasp.
Corded or Cordless
A cordless epilator might be a good choice if you prefer flexibility. Without having to look for a plug, you can use a cordless epilator pretty much anywhere.
All devices using the Wet & Dry technology are obviously cordless and can be used in the shower too. They mostly last 40 minutes on a single charge and take about an hour or so to load.
Cordless models come with either batteries or a built-in rechargeable battery. Keep in mind that the more powerful an epilator is, the faster it uses up battery life. A rechargeable cordless epilator may be a better choice for the long term. However, having a corded epilator instead means you don’t have to worry about things like that at all.
Additional Features and Accessories
Some models come with additional features like multiple speed options, a built-in light or a massage system. The pricier units also come with useful attachments like shaving heads, trimmers, different caps, and more. When choosing your epilator, think if any of these features are important to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does epilation mean?
Epilation is the act of removing hair from your skin. It is done by using an epilator, a small electrical device, which captures hairs on the skin level and removes them by the root. This results in smooth skin which can last from two to four weeks.
How does an epilator work?
There are different types of epilators on the market and the specific mechanism they use depends on the exact brand (and model) you choose. In general, they remove unwanted hairs by capturing them with tiny springs, spinning discs, or tweezers and then pulling them out by using moving parts that rotate.
How to use an epilator?
The epilation process itself is very simple and straightforward, but there are a couple of things you should do first to prep your skin:
1. If you’ve never epilated before, it’s recommended to shave your legs (or whatever area you intend to epilate) three to five days before epilation. Epilators work best on hairs 2-3 mm in length, so shaving them a couple of days before allows the hairs to grow back to a suitable length. Epilating shorter hairs is almost always less painful too.
2. Use a scrubbing glove or body scrub to exfoliate your skin a few of days before epilating. Exfoliation helps to prevent ingrown hairs by removing dead skin cells.
3. Keep your skin moisturized until you’re ready to epilate. Having dry, parched, and already sensitized skin will make epilation uncomfortable and painful. Hydrated, soft skin, on the other hand, will make the hair removal process much more comfortable.
Now, how to actually use an epilator?
- Hold the epilator at a 90-degree angle to your skin
- Don’t press the epilator too hard against it
- Keep skin taut as you go
- Epilate against the direction of hair growth
Are epilators painful?
Epilators are very convenient, easy to use and effective, but unfortunately, they are also painful. It depends on how sensitive you are but most people do experience some discomfort and pain when epilating for the first time. The good news is: there are ways to reduce epilation pain and as you get used to it, you’ll barely feel any pain in the future.
Which epilator is the best?
The best epilator is something that answers your personal needs:
What area of your body do you want to epilate? If it’s just your face, you’ll be good with a facial epilator. If you intend to remove hairs from different parts of your body, you’d be better off with a multifunctional hair removal tool.
Are your hairs thin and light or dark and coarse? Some epilators work best on thin hairs while others are more efficient at removing thick hairs.
Are you afraid of pain? An epilator that uses the Wet&Dry technology might be a good choice for you. This means you can use your epilator while in the shower or taking a bath and this is said to reduce pain.
Generally, all newer epilators answer all of these requirements. Make sure to figure out what you need before making a purchase.
Wrapping it up
Finding the right epilator may be a difficult task, but if you take these factors into account, you are sure to get exactly the type of product that matches your needs.
I hope you got all the information you need to pick the right epilator. If you have any further questions or suggestions, please leave a comment below or contact us through the Contact page.
